Match Report ........ richy
There was nothing sleepy about the Irvine City performance Sunday morning as they strode to a comfortable 7-2 win over the Saints. The city were without the services of Mark Murphy, Doc Ian Smith, Bill Sokol and Mike Mckindley but still produced a good result. Quoted after the game, Coach Murphy claimed " I was very happy with the way we played today in patches. It makes a change after being grumpy all week following the last weekend's 3-0 defeat."
After conceding an early goal following some dopey defending, ICFC responded in the best way possible. Richardson, fresh from a 3 week alcohol binge on Tyneside, opened the scoring from the back post following a pinpoint cross from Dave Brown, also recovering from an English Christmas Vacation. Soon after, Richardson was brought down for a penalty following a neat through ball from David Defriend (Christmas wherabouts unimportant) and slotted home himself to make it 2-1. Almost immediately, Jon Jones drove home a contender for goal of the season, picking up the ball at the edge of the box and finding the roof of the net. Richardson completed a first half hat-trick by rounding the Saints keeper and finishing after a delicate through ball by Jason Lill. 4-1 at halftime and Irvine City FC were well in control.
More of the same continued in second half as Dave Brown got a well deserved goal, volleying underneath the keeper from the edge of the box. At 5-1 a second Saints goal was of little concern as City pressed on for the win.. Dave Brown notched his second of the game after a quick piece of thinking by Lill. Brown picked up the ball after a quick free kick from Lill and ran into the Saints box to beat the keeper hard and low to the right. Kevin Valenzuala completed the days scoring moments from the end, receiving the ball inside the box from Richardson and neatly placing it past the keeper. The Saints appeared rather deflated and bashful as they left the field.
In reality, the only problem City faced all day , was how to contain an everlasting sprinkler head. A spare trash can came to the rescue, containing the water flow for most of the game. Hopefully, none of the players will be left sick and sneezy due to the swimming pool occupying the far right corner of the pitch. ICFC face Seahorses next weekend at Irvine Valley College, 10am and hope to continue their one game winning streak.
